Small Business, BIG Impact: Thurman & Fig are Changemakers
In 2015, Carly Thurman founded Thurman & Fig, a floral design company located in the Druid Hill Park area of northwest Baltimore. Specializing in wedding décor, the company finds inspiration in the term “lagom,” a Swedish word embodying simplicity and impactful statements.

And while Thurman uses that term to describe her day-to-day business, it’s also an accurate depiction of how the company shows up for their community. In addition to constant efforts to lower their carbon footprint through sustainability initiatives, they also support local non-profits through fundraising.
Spurred by early November news stories about the SNAP disruption and the government shutdown, Thurman & Fig sprang into action. Carly and her team designed and generously offered floral bouquets in exchange for pay-what-you-can donations—raising enough to provide about 1,000 meals to neighbors in need.
“We weren’t raised on SNAP, but there were times in my life where my maybe too-proud mother did subtle things to shield us, so it just doesn’t sit right with me to watch what’s going on—kids just shouldn’t be hungry,” shared Carly. ![]()
